Kamla campaign

Kamla's Success Story

The Kamla campaign was launched in 11 governorates in Egypt during the summer 2013 by the Coalition against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), supported by UNFPA. The word Kamla in Arabic means “complete” and “perfect”, and was chosen in order to emphasize that girls are complete and perfect the way they are, and do not need to be cut.

Community celebrations have since been held commemorating both the International Day of Zero Tolerance for FGM
6
th of February and National Day of Zero Tolerance for FGM 14th of June in 17 governorates. The events are held in the schools where the FGM coalition has interventions, youth centers, NGO premises and other venues. The activities focus around community dialogue on FGM and tools such as theater plays through partners like Noon Creative Enterprise are used to open dialogue. Key community leaders are also invited but events essentially target community members in an effort to raise awareness of target communities around the harmful practice of FGM especially for the National Day as the summer coincide with the high season of FGM in Egypt.
